Don’t you feel that there is a contradiction? Most libertarians, (and certainly Ayn Rand), would find that the two are at odds. Libertarians would emphasize individual liberty and choice. Nationalism by its very nature is collectivist and nationalist policies are made not out of concern for the individual but out of concern for the group as a whole.Veganovichnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9839224.post-55155378275715963532010-02-20T20:48:34.755-05:002010-02-20T20:48:34.755-05:00Great post. The orthodox community in Detroit is very close knit, and, sad to say, very closed minded. She seems like a well adjusted and interesting young woman who is far better off not being a part of the "frum" community. I never identified as orthodox and never felt freer than the day I left Akiva, a MO day school. I dunno though, my politics tend more than superficially toward the liberal.

Then again, that's probably only because I have a far more informed and intelligent opinion on social issues. I'm pretty much ignorant about the economic ones.

An interesting statistic: A study in the Journal Nature by Larson and whitham in 1998 showed that in the National Academy of Sciences, 93% don't believe in God.

Paul Bell published an article in Mensa magazine that found high correlation between intelligence/education level and atheism (as in, the higher your level of education, the less likely you are to believe in God)

Obviously statistics aren't the be-all-end-all. Or even very far from the beginning, really. Fast food in general is horrid and even though I love diners because you can get an omelet and coffee at any time of the day or night, Diner food doesn't like me.

For this audience I feel the need to reassure the readers that this has nothing to do with it's non-kosher status. I eat shrimp, crab, pork, bacon cheeseburgers regularly and they don't make me sick when they are from a decent restaurant or home cooked.

Women with balls... I couldn't help but have a 13 year old chuckle with that one.

I identified with your upbringing as well. No frummie music, super open-minded, non-Jewish family, very accepting parents of my current worldview and behaviors, though of course I don't go bragging about the delicious Mexican food that I had Friday night at the local bar. I don't find it respectful.

I wonder if there's a correlation between this sort of semi-rebel upbringing and libertarian tendencies. I'd be more of a left-libertarian so Ayn Rand my hero is not. Capitalism is a curse not the source of all that is good IMHO. But personal liberty is still a top value for me. Also, I find Nationalism despicable.

Anyhow... Thanks for sharing.
